Oops that last sentence didn't come out too well, what I meant to say was "engineers are more relaxed and friendlier now, than the old days".

That goes for all the guys on here, great bunch, very helpful and a pleasure to chat with :)

That was back in the days when all we had was bungee elastic straps,no mobile fone, no lap top only pagers, but must admit i got my ACT together when I went into self employment.

The engineers were very unhelpful towards each other in them days, no advice and if you cocked up you took the consequences, unlike me who will help anyone.

Iam not ashamed to admit that the first scanny I crashed i bent the pins on the nvm, no one told me there was such a thing as an insert/removal tool.

You asked for advice and got none, not a nice environment or trade to be in in those days, also one senior engineer had one apprentice under their wing but was used as a skivey and taught nothing. Not suprising really that most left in pursuit of another career.

The ones that stuck the apprenticeship were thrown in at the deep end after learning very little, and were expected to make their own way or in some cases muddle through, without being taught the relevant skills in the trade.

Thank god for modern apprenticeships today, but still there is a lot of undertrained out there who are employed by the larger co's, but do get help and advice if needed.

Yep it's still a dog eat dog world, but a lot less relaxed and friendlier towards engineering colleagues.

"Dam it" I've been doing it wrong for all these years, who needs a PAC tester?, looks like my gold&gold was a waste of money.so isolating mains and if the bells ring means the battery is kaput?,

Thanks for that tip SD, I will pass that tip onto all my engineering friends, but if they laugh at me I'll be back to give you an ear bashing :),

Seriously though 10 out of 10 for diagnosing said battery fault :)

e manno, September 2012
Could be battery failure. unfortunately, they do not last forever. switch mains off, if the outside sounder goes off battery dead. get a new one, after 1st checking fuses in the main unit. it will have on the battery the capacity you need. available a lot of places, maplins, if you have one local, or web. If not that repost
