my wife removed a pir unit too paint round it.
after switching alarm back on it resets but still shows a tamper fault and after a short time the alarm sounds

So wife only removed the PIR's cover and painted around the rest of the PIR in situ, is that a correct assumption?

It's still in tamper mode!,

Remove and refit the cover, the front tamper switch must be fully closed.There's also a rear tamper on the unit, that also must be fully closed.

Check the PIR then get back to us.

Ps how old is the backup battery?

pps do you know the engineering code,

ppps did wife actually remove the PIR and disconnect any of it's wiring?
