my transit 2.4 td van wont start there is air in fuel line when trying to prime the system i was told to push button on top or filter housing and pump it untill it becomes firm but it doesnt get firm it stays the same is that normal

these can be difficult to get going when there is air in the system.Have you changed the filter? or did it just start with this fault of its own accord?you could try and remove filter and fill manually with clean diesel and another option is to get a fuel pipe fitted down on the pump directly with a funnel filled with diesel and see if it will start then,if it does then refit all pipes and try again,good luck
