any ideas about a water leak in a megane?

I recently bought a 1996 Renault Megane for my Mother, only 64,000 miles on the clock, goes lovely, flew through the MOT apart from tyres. The only thing is, whenever it rains, the carpets are soaked. All the gromets are ok, her local mechanic has tested some pipes that go behind the dashboard- all ok. Whenever he puts a hose pipe over the car, no water leaks are found. Yet still it leaks whenever it rains.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and was it fixed?

The "scuttle" drains under the mesh behind the wipers get blocked and it causes water to come inside the cabin = 70% of water. Other 30% comes from the box around the air con unit. This also has a drain to let condensation from air con unit out, and can get blocked with crud and need to be cleared. Once youve cleared these youll need to remove and dry the carpet as it wontdry out while in place. Bit of a mission as you'll need to remove seats and handbrake unit - but its worth it.

Exactly as described. If there is a pool of water in front corner of drip tray under open sunroof thats your problem.

So today, I can see that the drain pipe is blocked on the driver side - the side which gets water pools.

I used the curtain pipe to check and clear any blockage, but no luck the blockage is still there.

Can someone guide me with a picture of description of "To unblock these tubes you need to access the front wheel arches and clear out all the muck from the tubes."...

I've just bought a 2001 megane coupe, the lady who sold it to me did tell me about the leak, apparently a mechanic told her the seal around the sunroof needs removing & cleaned every 3-6 months. As we have our normal british weather I have not tried this yet, but i will certainly look on utube for any video's that show how difficult/easy this actually is !! :-))

Same problem on 2000 Megane. Finally found the answer here though. Put steering on full lock, prised back plastic wheel arch cover that is held by three grommets. There was the drain pipe blocked by mud. Prodded mud out and water gushed out. Hopefully job done. Thanks for the help here.

hi i bought a renault scenic 1996 and had the same problems i tried the hose pipe job but it didd'nt work. what i done my self is, trace an orange tube from my sunroof (front) which led to the wheel arch panel at the back of both front wheels (one each sides).

using a flat head screwdriver lift the black plastic where the car colour ends and the panel begins, behind that is the exit pipe at the end, you will find a small black tube, pull it off and clean that out. now replace it. and when the heaven's cries, there be no more tears from you eyes. thak you. any problems contact me at yurieshiloh@hotmail.co.uk and use (renault) as subject...

Have you cleared the drainage channels from the front scuttle? Shouls be under the plastic cover around wiper area - both sides have drain holes which get blocked with leaves and dirt.

I have the same problem - tried to remove said drainpipe from the sunroof but it was stuck fast - how do you get to the bottom of the drainpipe to clean it out?

I have the same problem on a 96 coupe.
today i got stuck in traffic for about two hours stood still.
if life wasnt bad enough the weather changed for the worse and started to rain heavy.
this seemed the ideal time to investigate the leak.
I managed to pull back the Passangers Carpet to find even more water than i expected. about 2 inches. NICE.
I havent had a chance to examine the sunroof drainage as yet but noticed water dripping from under the centre of the dash.
also i have notice in the past, if the car is stould in the rain for the day, i turn on the blowers and water comes out of them especially the foot blowers.
I have been told the drainage for the vents by the front window blocks up and the overflow of water gets into the car somehow. this is not easy to find.

anyway ill be looking again this weekend, if i dont find anything the cars for sale, so if anyone is interested in a mobile swimming pool for the summer, let me know .

If you pull the card trimming slightly away from the roof area by the door pillars, you will see a whitish plastic tube, about 1/2 inch diameter. This is the drain tube, which takes water from the sunroof fitting down inside the car to just behind the wheel arches, where the water runs out. The drainage tube will be blocked with road dirt which has got in behind the wheel arch.
Get access to the end, and there is a plastic stopper with some small holes in it, which is supposed to stop mud getting in, but is easily blocked after a few years. Use a piece of wire to get any dirt out, and then carefully pour water onto the closed sunroof. Repeat for the other side. You should see it coming out of the drain tube. Hope this helps.

Thanks Shaheer, but the mechanic has already tried this (apparently). If anyone else has any other suggestions, they would be much appreciated.

Karl Riley, December 2006
its the drainage tubes for the sunroof. To unblock these tubes you need to access the front wheel arches and clear out all the muck from the tubes.

I have the same problem, but I have no answer yet !
My Megane is 1.6 1996, and I have on original sunroof which I maybe think can be a problem. But I am not sure. These week is holiday and I am going to investigate this more now.
I`ll be back later.
