How can I get my radio and CD player to work?

I have a Citroen Nemo van and as per the manual went to "Menu" and then to "Radio" and up came a flashing massage "radio on" but nothing happened, then another flashing message "no CD inserted" but again nothing happened-what else do I need to do to get both to light up and work properly
