Battery back up?

We inherited a Veritas 8 Alarm system. When the electric goes off the alarm immediately goes off and we have to re-set it. We understood from previous owners that there is a battery which should cut in when electric goes off. Now very nervous about being away from home as the electric supply could go off which will start our alarm going off. How can we check this. Also not been serviced since we moved her 2 year ago, do you think we should have it serviced and how do we go about finding someone trustworthy to do it.

could be one of those pre credit meters guys, the type you need to top up with card or keys, the type the elec companies rip off the public with :-)

Where are all these places that have an intermittent mains supply?

One of my first calls would be to my electricity service providers.

you can replace the battery yourself, remove the fuse from the spur unit that feeds the panel(if it has one,if not turn the mains power off at the consumer unit, sorry fuse box)now open the panel, remove the red and black wires from the battery, get yourself a new one same as old one, replace the wires on the battery, red to red, black to black terminals on battery, refit the cover, turn mains power on,reset the panel, now you have sorted it out, take a bow :-)
