If you try to sign on a clerk and it doesn't work then you need to do an 'initial clear'. This will not clear your programming so don't worry. But if nothing else works there is a chance the battery on your mother board has died and the first time the electricity is cut to the machine you loose the program in the register. Also a bad keyboard will cause the same problem. The ER-5100 series had bad keyboards. They used little metal 'tits' that after lots of use would cut into the printed circuit contact below a much used key. The later, much improved keyboards are great.

It is waiting for you to sign on. If no one is signed on, you can't be open for business. Enter your sign on code and press CLERK button (sometimes labelled CLK or CLK#)
