Steering locking up on renault megane?

When driving my renault megane 1.9dci the steering has all of a sudden locked up nearly causing a accident, does anyone know why?

it could be whiring problem if the steering column system lock by driver identification system .i had problem when i insert the card steering and shifter wount mouve the cause was automatic trans whiring....inlight more what hapend

broken outer cv joint could be cause? has it been knocking for a while, or boot split allowing grease to leak out?
