singer 413 problem?

singer 413, when the hook picks up the bottom thread, it loops round the bottom bobbin instead of sliding over the top of it. is this a timing problem or something else? the hook moves freely and smoothly so I'm assuming there are no broken gears. asked in a singer shop and the guy wouldn't give me any advice, £50 to look at the machine was the best he could do. I'm fixing the machine for free for a new mum who doesn't have the money to spend on repairs. thank you for any advice.

to be honest i think i have the wrong bobbins. the correct ones look to be domed? mine are not. timing seems to be right judging by the timing marks on the needle bar and the fact that the needle and hook meet at the right place.

you have what is known as an apollo bobbin case. black on later models grey on the older models, between the edge of the bobbin case and the silver bar there should be enough gap the thickness of thread, you can adjust the closeness by the screws on the right, if that does not work you will need to retime it, I can send you timing instructions but this site does not allow email addresses to be shown so type my email address as you say it not as you see it.
