timing belt?

on a 1.8 diesel endura non turbo engine. 2000 reg i think i no where the pulleys will go for marks a i also know that the pump can be locked. but does it have to be on a compression stroke like a petrol engine does or is it just line up the 2 pullys and lock the pump then put new belt on????? thanks

as long as neither pulley moves when the belt is off you should be ok.A dab of paint/marker fluid on each pulley and the engine should ensure no movement, turn the engine a couple of turns by hand when the new belt is on,if the marks line up then you are ok.
