I have had to replace the pump on three occasions, (last time August 2012) Each time it has gone short circuit, causing the mains to trip. The shaft is free to rotate and no other obvious problem. Supply polarity to pump and circuitry is correct. B/W unaware of any recuring problem. Any suggestion as to cause?

I think you are probably just unlucky. Never had any problems, no reason for them to go short cct,
