nissan tino MOT fail on emissions?

I have a 03 reg petrol 1.8 tino. The engine management light came on 3 weeks ago. I had it coded and it came up with the lambda sensor. 2 days later it went off. It drives fine. Took it for the mot yesterday and it failed on emissions. CO was 9.17 and the limit was 0.30. The mechanic said to me it was getting to much fuel and it was dumping it out of the exhaust. This is why the fault was saying lambda sensor as the fuel is wetting the sensor. It is using a lot of fuel.

I assume that it is not misfiring, and that it is running smoothly on all 4 cylinders.

Report back on the air filter when you've checked that.

Ok thanks for your help. I will check it tomorrow. Failing that would you think the next step would be to do a fuel pressure test.

I would check the air filter first. If it is dirty and clogged the engine could be running too rich.

A new air filter is only £11.99 from Halfords.

Unsure about the air filter. I have only owned the car for 2 months. Do you Think its a air flow problem.

When did you last renew the air filter? Sounds as if it might be dirty or wet.
