Hi I bought a used Royal Alpha 583cx cash register, followed the directions to load paper and tried the register to print sale reciepts and to no avail, just a blank reciept. What is wrong? Do I need a need printer?

It sounds like you have the wrong paper or it is not inserted correctly. You should be using thermal paper. If you check the paper carefully, it will have a shiny side and a rough side. The shiny side must face the front when coming out of the machine or you will get blank paper feeding out.
