Scantronic 4600?

Never had any problems with this system for last 20 years but now I do. The keyboard panel went clear without any warning (no power led flash) possibly through the night. I changed the battery and the system rebooted until later that day the same thing happened but this time with external siren sounding. Removed the battery and shutdown mains power to kill completely and found the new battery had lost power, recharged the battery and tested under load and found the battery to be 100% ok. Connected the battery again and the system rebooted but the control panel LED light flashes which sytem faults describes as 'mains fail'. Could the sytem have finally called it a day and time to replace or is the solution fixable.

e manno,i love looking through bins full of electronic gear,am in my element

gts, April 2013
We have big recycle bins for gear that is ripped out at work, the lads take what they want and TBH I know a lot of stuff dont make its way in there, but i'am always routing through them and bringing stuff home.

I've picked some great stuff up over the years and still collecting but wife goes ape when I bring more,

We have modest sized double garage and can't get a car in either for my stuff and that really pisses the old girl off,

She always going on at me to sort the garages out so me go in there with good intantions for sorting and skipping stuff but be not throw anything away me only move stuff around.

Me always find something like old panel or transformers then spend the rest of the day playing and testing them.

So nowt gets done and TBH me don't care cos it's my stuff not the wife's and my garage and workshop is my retreat :D

e manno, April 2013
he welcome to it e manno,i, like you have an engineers failing we collect stuff, our treasures but our wifes call it junk !!!!if we can help mac get his system back on beam that's brill, thats why we come on this site for,:-)

aww e manno,y u say that??my cheques only bounce an inch or so :-)am hurt ,boo hoo !!

gts, April 2013
No more rubber ones please :D

He lucky man gts it's a good hybrid panel that's built to last and becoming harder to find as a replacement,

Last one I saw was on eBay some years ago and I put a bid on it myself just so I could have a replacement pcb/psu in stock.

And that was a used one.. But to find one fresh & boxed is rarer than a hens tooth nowadays.

Mac lucky guy he not find one elsewhere and it should see him right for another 20 years plus.:)

e manno, April 2013
your cheque in the post e manno :-)

gts, April 2013
Ok mate as gts has said it sounds like the transformer has had it.gts will look after you he good man :)

All the best mac :)

one more thing,i have a hand held pa unit,if I can find it I will pop it in box too, again you will need to solder new battery in it

gts, April 2013

gts, April 2013
no prob mac,we help when we can ,the panel of no use to me so am glad you can use it,i will post it next week I don't have user manual but have the engineering book with the stencil, have fun mate ,regards, gts

Thanks for the reply e manno, I have checked live and neutral one side of poly fuse with reading of 246v,other side of poly fuse 246v, if I take poly fuse out no reading so I know fuse is ok. On the wire connections after the transformer to the panel 'AC in' I have no reading which suggests it could be the transformer at fault. Apart from replacing transformer(which I am grateful to gts if he sends me new panel) is there any other way of testing transformer?

Mac, April 2013
Checking the Mains supply. With your meter set to AC, measure from Live and Neutral incoming to the P.S.U. you should get a reading of between 225 to 254volts AC.

Checking the Transformer AC output. With your meter set to the 20–50 volt AC, measure the secondary side of the PSU (From the PSU to the control panel) you should get a reading of between 17 to 21 volts AC.

e manno, April 2013
getting 240v both side of polyfuse but no reading at 'AC in' so possibility that transformer has gone. No smell or signs of burning at transformer so unsure? Tried resetting panel back to factory default but the power LED still continues to flash 'mains fail' the only other thing is to replace transformer and test again? unless anyone can tell me how else to test it.

Mac, April 2013
unfotunately most of the guys on here where around in this game long before the 4600 was born !!!!i think collectively we must have around 2 to 300 experience between us,now ,dont i feel old !!!:-)

gts, April 2013
the only fuse there is a 240 v one you should get around 13.75 volts to battery leads if you do not get this then the poly fuse has gone o/c you could try resetting the panel back to factory defaults, some times this can reset the poly fuse,if not the panel is goosed.wil find out how much postage is and will tell you try the reset let us know how you get on please

gts, April 2013
Sorry wasn't expecting such quick responses with it being an old system. The battery is 100% Ok as i checked it under load with a battery tester. 240v Ok to transformer but no measure from transformer to battery. Have taken photo of alarm panel and shown somebody who suggest that at the top of the electrical connections is a fuse holder, although it doesn't look like one. Will check this and let you know. Thanks for your kind offer GTS if you let me know postage I can use it.

Mac, April 2013
it ok e manno,i have had it in stock for years,if some one can use it they are welcome, but he seems in no hurry to reply, not to worry :-)

gts, April 2013
We all like to help gts but to give that away?,

Hope this one appreciates what you are offering here :),

His chances of finding a pcb or a replacement elsewhere are slim to say the least.

e manno, April 2013
i have a brand new 4600 in stock c/w stencil and manual, you can have it for nothing if you want to pay the postage,:-)

gts, April 2013
have you checked the source of the mains supply?and how did you check the battery ?there no fuses as such (glass type)but polyswitches, that will reset after the removal of a s/c the 4600 was very reliable radio panel recheck the battery with a ACT tester
