The alarm keeps going off at regular intervals for no apparent reason,it also goes off if our room door slams shut or I bang on the wall so I'm thinking there's a damaged wire running through the cavity.

My main problem and this is why I'm here is how do you test this wire ?.

Before you break your hammer shaft ( which will cost more to replace than the sterlin) there's two sides to any wall so this wall... What regarding alarm equipment is mounted on either side of this wall?,because you not say if it a tamper alarm or full alarm condition.

First things first.
Get a hammer and kill the thing called "Sterling".
Now get a nice new panel ( Not a lot ) and then find your problems are gone.
