1st gear crunches on my 2006 280 transit?

hi i have a ford transit 280 swb i have a problem with the first gear it does go in and drive but most of the time it wont go in and makes a crunching sound. will be great if some one nows how i can fix it thanks

Yeah I think it does go in with the engine off, but saying that it feels like its going in to gear when I'm driving but the crunches back out. Worried its a gearbox issue and I don't want to worsen it. Now avoiding first gear until I can get a diagnosis.

does it go into gear ok with the engine off? If it does then suspect clutch clearance issues,check under the g/box bell housing and look for fluid leaking,if there is then suspect release bearing
