my gearbox is stuck in 2nd gear and I can also select 5th but that is it

have had one or two of these like this,if you take off the selector housing and they just seem to be ok,nothing seized,you can select all gears by hand but will re occurr after a short time,in the end had to get new g/boxes,another thing worth doing is to remove lower cover and check sun and planet gears in the diff
