How to fix my mk1 golf?

Hiya, I am having some issues with my mk 1 golf. She started coughing yesterday then whilst driving the revs died. She didn't stall but when i got power back she backfired and popped a flame (this has never happened before.) I went to start her later on in the evening and she starts every time but wont hold revs, instantly dies and does not respond to any throttle etc. I'm completely stumped. do
Recently i have fitted an uprated walbro fuel pump could it have something to do with that?

If your exhaust system suffers flames and explosions then the cause is un-burnt fuel building up in the pipes...

If you have fuel vapor in the exhaust system then it's not being properly burnt in the cylinder.

Your engine may be suffering a loss of compression - fouled plugs or a weak spark.

I wonder why you felt it necessary to fit an "uprated" fuel pump - will it be squirting more fuel into the engine?

I know nothing about cars - no expertise or experience.
