is it still safe to drive astra with tapping noise top of engine until I can afford to get looked at

it's a T reg but in good condition it passed mot in January with nothing wrong or no advisores would it be still worth having camshaft and tappets repaired

Sounds like a worn camshaft or hydraulic tappets. It'll cost a bit to repair, a new camshaft is expensive and a set of new hydraulic tappets won't be cheap.

If the car is old I wouldn't bother. When it fails the MOT you'll need to judge whether to get rid by selling it for spares or repair.

The noise itself won't cause it to fail the MOT.

i did oil change beginning of feb also today 31 may and still tapping

How long has it been since you did an engine oil and filter change? If a long time the camshaft is probably running dry and wearing irretrievably.
