Water continues to run into tub after it should shut off?

Cannot wash without standing by the washing machine and turning the water off after each fill cycle as the water continues to run into the tub and does not shut off as it should - help! What do I need to fix that?

You didn't give the make but if it is a hotpoint early model they were prone to the small air tube running up to the pressure switch rubbing against the drum and wearing through and letting the air out. Cheers

Start filling the machine and then pause it. Water should stop straight away, no hesitation. If it keeps running in, turn power off and see if it stops. If it still runs in then the inlet valve is faulty. Replace it. If water does stop when you do this test then it is probably what CK said.
