08 VW Golf 1.8 TDi MK5 - No ignition - car won't start?

Hi,

My 2008 VW Golf 1.9 TDi suddenly failed to start. Whilst in conversation with another person outside the car, I unlocked the car with remote central locking but the car had self-locked due to not having opened the door. So I unlocked again and the car self-locked after a short while as I was still in convo. I tried another third time and the car self-locked. I opened the door on the fourth attempt and when I tried to start the car there was no response. There was no ignition, no jerk at all. All electrics work fine though. Battery is good as I had driven 36 miles just prior to this. Have I done something wrog? The car is generally in tip top condition with recent vw service. Please help me.

Many thanks in advance.
