welding a car?

need to weld an exhaust bracket on the wifes 08 focus. been 20 years since i welded a car and i used to disconnect the battery and alternator. what do mechanics do now ? (ie with engine management unit etc)

if you are mig/electric welding it would be safer to disconnect the battery
