when my driver's window goes up and down there is a big squeaky noise. vehicle is a megane 1.9 diesel convertable with glass roof.

When it stops squeaking is the time to worry. The motor would have burned out, and it will cost you a fortune to replace it. Window motor failure on Renaults is a regular occurrence, as are loads of other electrical faults. If you look on this site you will see that you are not alone with problems with this make of car.
