You might be able to find complete strut assemblies online, which would save you much time and doubt- if your spring is done, chances are the rest of the unit is too. Amazon, eBay, Partsgeek are good sources. If you buy from your local national chain store, they'll loan you the tools, or you can buy a spring compressor for $35 or so. Follow instructions in your manual, and be VERY careful once the damper nut and upper mount are off! And yes, you do need to replace both sides!

if one spring has gone its only good practice to replace both you can remove the McPherson strut and take it to a garage if you don't have the spring compressors the strut is held in place by 3 nuts at top of unit,you need to remove the two bolts that hold the hub to the strut easy job

you have to remove the strut assy and you will need spring compressors to fit a new spring,another alternative is to get a complete strut from a scrappy and just change over the whole unit.
