when i turn it on all the lights come on the when i press the start button only the spin and low lights light up. i cant get the machine to start at all

Does it start beeping? If so, count which lights are on. So if you count from the right hand side the spin light will be No.1. So you will have something like 1 on- 2,3 off- then 4 on etc. That will tell me the error code and I can then tell you what is wrong.
