1st gear when in stays in the middle/centre where 3rd usually is?

Hi.
Sorry my English is not that good but I will try to explain anyway.
I have Ford Transit 2000, 2.5 Diesel manual, The problem I’m having is I think the gear is Loose , When I put in 1st gear it goes/moves to the middle/Centre where 3rd gear usually is, So because the 1st gear when is in stays in the middle/centre it makes difficult to select 2nd gear because then you will have to push it to the left before selecting 2nd gear, its very easy to put it in 4 instead.
Can anyone tell me what could the problem be?

Thanks.

Hi cdb

I did everything u said,
I removed the gear lever, removed the rubber gaiter at the gear lever then I took off the bolts holding it, I cleaned and wiped everything there and put everything back as they were,

Now the gear lever behave absolutely brilliant, it still spring to the centre but only little bit. But its much better now than it was before. I don’t know what was wrong, but its much better now than it was before I removed it and cleaned it.
I feel I have a new car now.

Thank you very much for your help, God bless u.

Not sure but you could check the selector below the gear lever, remove the rubber gaiter at the gear lever to expose the four bolts holding on the gear lever, when removed I think there is a red coloured bush with brass insert, check it for wear, also where that bush is located at the end of the selector shaft there is a pinch bolt which sometimes sheared, maybe worth a look also, good luck.
