After a power failure how can I restart a TEC MA 1400?

Have had this cash register for years and it has worked well. Today there was a power outage which lasted about 30 mins. All the buttons are now dead and the display lights with arrows pointing down. Turning the power switch off and on it powers up and the tape motor moves. Could it be the battery is gone. If it is the rechargeable battery what size or kind is it?

Thank you I have a good electrician friend looking into it. Were is it located and do you need to take the whole till apart to get at it?

Yes. It should have been replaced every three years by a dealer. It is a plug-in NiCd type. The register will have lost all programming.
