VW Golf brakes?

When i push the brake pedal its ok at first then the pedal goes down if i hold it there, and I have to pump it to get pressure. Is this the master cylinder at fault and if so can i get a seal kit for it , and how do i fit it . (I have good engineering abilities) Its a VW Golf diesel year 03. Many thanks for any replies.

have you recently had work done on the brakes? they might need bleeding. check the brake fluid level, is it low/empty? if so, you may have a leak somewhere, get someone to apply brake pressure and check all brake pipes and calipers/wheel cylinders. check clutch slave cylinder if one is fitted as these are usually connected to the brake master cylinder. if all is good you will have to investigate the master cylinder/brake servo.
