2004 avensis 2.0 petrol?

driving on motorway the car overheated. steam was comming out of the bonnet. i pulled over to let the engine cool but it wouldnt start again had to grt towed home

It could be any number of things,was there coolant? Is there a leak? Thermostat? Water pump? If it was driven for any length of time overheating then the engine could be a write off,very expensive. Would check compressions and try and get it started,try and source a leak, it is impossible to say what your problem is.
