The drain pump keeps working after the dishwasher is fully drained. Using the on/off button to turn the dishwasher off makes no difference - it keeps pumping. Same for when I open the door - it keeps pumping. I turned it off at the switch, waited a couple of hours and turned it back on - it immediately started pumping again - even though it is empty.

Sounds like a control board issue. What ever is on the board i.e. a triac which will switch the pump on and off has failed in the on position. A good tech may be able to find and replace the defective part. If not then it will mean a whole new control board.
