chek timing is correct on 1.8 T reg diesel mondeo?

can any one tell me where I`m going wrong I`ve got the fuel pump timed correct and can not find the timing marks for the camshaft. The only thing on the camshaft is the cut out at the end of shaft but the is no hole in the gear at the front to make sure that it is number one at tdc. Veh turns over but wont start I think the crankshaft is timed correct as it was the belt between the crankshaft and the camshaft the broke. And not between the fuel pump and crankshaft any idea`s

HI there
1st if the belt between the crank & the cam shafts broke there is a 99% chance that the valves have bent and possable damage to the cylinder head the car wont start

2nd the cut out at the rear of the cam shaft is the timing alignment you insert a bar between the cam and the cyl head it can only go one way to ensure correct tdc no 1 piston
