problem with scantronic 9600 alarm?

hi, i have a 9600 alarm recently i have removed the internal speaker for decorating, i had the panel in engineer mode, i thought i would replace the dirty old alarm cable from the panel to the speaker with new 8 core, on connecting i heard a click from the panel i think the polyfuse has blown 1 of them is warm, i have removed the load and nowthe panel seems to have frozen however the keypad and sensor still light. all connections in panel look fine i only removed and replaced the old cable i never touched anything else on the system. what should i do thanks.

hi gts i ordered a battery yesterday for advanced delivery, it arrived today so i replaced the battery the keypad is now responding again and the system is working, however i had to reprogram the system which wasn't to much trouble with the manual. whew i really thought this was game over but im not giving up on great system, the funny thing is i have wired new zones to this panel before live and nothing like this has ever happened , but from now i will definately take your advice onboard and switch off the panel if i decide to wire anything to the system. i also noticed electrostatic sensitive devices this may well have been the cause, anyway thanks very much for your help have a great day:)

you may have caused some damage to the m/p try replacing the battery first, then do a reset ,the stencil am on about you get with the panel, you placed it over the keypad and it gives you the info to reset the panel,,i gave a brand new panel away a few months ago, complete with the books and stencil,
when I say brand new,i mean it was at least 30 years old,but never been used .try replace the battery, then get back to us, for future ref.never work on a live panel, batt or mains, hope you get it fixed

what stencil, i have the manual, do you recon its the battery ive measured the battery voltage and its 13.6v so is the charging voltage but like you said that doesnt tell you anthing, the keypad has power the display is just frozen, everything has power. ive obviously upset the system in some way, could working on the panel live effect the battery status in turn causing the poly to heat up and lock the keypad? thanks

jim, May 2014
you cant test the battery with a normal test meter we use unit that puts dummy load on battery its called a ACT

GTS, April 2014
nope, replace the battery,it could be causing the poly to heat up the life of batt is 2 to 5 years .you did not say if you had the stencil or not ?on panels with normal fuses a faulty batt can blow the fuse

gts, April 2014
hi i have connected the the correct wires in the right terminals and all looks sound no shorts the poly is still quite warm, the battery is about 4 years old could shorting those resistor cause the system to freeze. should i leave it off overnight thanks

jim, April 2014
do you have the stencil ?

gts, April 2014
that's all it takes at times mate just a second to blow something .the scantronic 9600 is not known to freeze or lock out wire colours don't matter as long as they go to the right connection .have you replaced the stand by battery ?? recently

gts, April 2014
i think the panel has frozen or locked out, the sounders are disconnected the polyfuse is still warm but have removed the load and tried restarting the system but the key is just frozen. thanks in all honestly i wish i just left the old cable as it is, is it possible the new cable is faulty in some way i have the equipment, what the hell have i done to it, thanks

jim, April 2014
hi yes i did connect the panel live i only touched the siren and a/t terminals i used red & yellow for+, black and blue for -, and green and white for tamper. however one of the wires did very briefly touched the circuit i believe it may have shorted two resistors but there are no burn marks and it was only a split second, could this have upset the main board in some way,i have disconnected and reconnected the alarm and tried resetting the nvm as instructed on the manual, all the sensors internal external strobe keypad work and have power just the keypad is unresponsive and display is frozen, i had to end up disconnecting the sounders because the keypad is usleess at the moment,im going on just thought i would explain fully whats happened, could the battery have been effected by this the panel is quite warm thanks

you obvios have fitted speaker cable in wrong place hence the fuse going, and you did this live ???you could do a reset,it may work,if not you got a prob mate, never, ever replace anything on a live panel you need get an engineer out who knows what he's doing, the 9600 is a brill old girl
