I have a IBM laptop think pad?

Do you also have DEV 086 and FRU 0010 messages? It looks like it mean that, for any reason, your computer can no longer find the hard drive or any other drive that may be used as a boot device such as a CD or DVD drive.

The proposed solutions I found suggest transfering the drive to another computer as a slave drive or to an external drive case and copy it's content to some other location.

If the fault is due to a problem with the drive's logic board, the data recovery may not be possible depending on the exact nature of the fault.
Even if there are no fault preventing access to the drive's content, the drive must considered to be near dead and not to be trusted for anything.

Next, get a new drive, install it in the thinkpad, format and install the operating system, install all required drivers, install all your applications and restore your data.
