i have to coax my drill to start by hitting bottom of battery pack and pressing trigger on and off

It's unlikely that your drill has 2 faults - one in the battery pack and a second with the trigger.

I suspect that the battery is not the culprit - hitting it does not make the drill work - it may well be that the trigger is OK too.

Have you considered the connection between drill and battery?
