Rover 414 slipping clutch?

I was driving recently on motorway and for no reason my clutch started slipping. Could u plz tell me why? or how to stop this happening again thank u

if the cars under load eg towing,hill,overtaking.the clutch is on its last legs,or if its high mileage new clutch,or a bad oil leak resulting in loss of friction.do u drive with ur foot resting on the clutch?
