Peugeot 206 2002, battery charge fault?

I had issue with the car battery about 10months ago so had new battery then after few months had new alternator fitted. Less than 6mnths later I had a battery charge fault warning on dash and battery light came on, this happens a few times until it cut out completely whilst I was driving 1night, I was told the alternator wasn't charging the battery so took it back to garage who fitted new one who then replaced it with another new alternator, we r round about 5/6months since having that one done and ita now happening again. My lights flickered for wk or 2 before this also, can it be an electrical fault that's causing this, desperate to get sorted as need car for work

I have a 206 2000
I've got the same problem
Took it to few places and they couldn't tell what's the problem
I'm not sure what to do now.

It will be great if anyone give me an advice.

An alternator should last for years. I'd be checking electrical connections to battery and earth lead. The connectors should make a firm connection - do they? If your car is a hatchback the battery should be 175mm tall. If it is a convertible 190mm tall. Which is yours?

I took it to Halfords n they put the new one on for me and worked fine until alternator went also went fine for 5/6mnths after new alternator then had problems so had another new alternator fitted which has been ok for same length of time now I'm back to square one n surely cnt b alternator again.

Have you got the right size battery? If you have a 206cc then the battery for the hatchback is the wrong height, and vice versa.

Thanks for the reply, its the main headlights that were flickering for a wk or so just before the battery warning light came on and also lights on dash dim just before warning light also.

run engine, get a volt meter, connect it across the battery terminals, you should get a reading of 14.5 volts,if lower than this, you have either a faulty alternator,or earth strap to engine
mount,or loose fan belt not charging the battery, but french cars
electrics are rubbish ,as are their cars ,ask the guys who own renults who have the electric window motors burn out because of water ingress the the company know about but dont bother to rectify the fault ,

New Battery
Then New Alternator
Then flickering lights (you do not say which lights)
Then another New Alternator
Can it be an electrical fault?

It can only be an electrical fault - and in all my motoring since the 1970s I have never had an alternator fault - nobody I know has ever reported an alternator fault - if asked to guess I would say that you have never had an alternator fault either.

The light that tells you about the battery charging or not - i.e the Battery Not Charging Light - is On when the battery isn't charging and Off when the battery is charging - unless....

Unless that is - that there's a problem with the lamp itself or the wire that runs from the lamp to the alternator - the exciter wire. If this is open circuit (broken lamp or bad connection on the wire) the alternator gets no excitation current and does not charge the battery - you will not know about it because the lamp stays off - the battery runs flat.

Before more expensive alternator work have the exciter wire and the lamp investigated - you never know - it may be down to just a dodgy bulb or bulb holder.

BTW - there are people on here who might say that you have this problem because you have a French car - there may be some truth in that but I couldn't possibly comment.

Good luck..., May 2015
