Engine management light came on pulling onto motorway but the car is still running fine but oil is low can this cause it to come on

Why don't you top up the oil first and see if this resolves the problem,or is your code reader handy!

There are umpteen sensors on engines now and yes low oil level could bring light on, the only way to find out is to get whatever motor you have onto a code reader.
