how can I fix my maytag A606 series 01?

My Maytag A606's cycle selector doesn't move on its own to advance the cycle. It does all the necessary functions (agitate, spin) but I have to manually turn the cycle selector knob for it to advance. It will stay on the agitation phase for hours if I don't turn the knob to the rinse cycle.

Tina,
I had this problem. The timer motor died. In the control panel you remove a circular motor (it is in a bronze casing) that drives the cycle selector via a gear. I was fortunate to find a parts dealer who sold me a used one. I don't know if the part # is stamped on it, so it may be tough to be sure you're getting the right part.
Good luck!
