can someone plz give me advice on my pc problem?

I am running windows 8. later on my hubby decides to upgrade to windows 8.1. It was running ok for a while, until yahoo.com didn't work so I had a diff search engine, one I didn't know where it came from but it was better than nothing. Later on I upgrade to windows 10....I didn't like the way it looked so I went back to factory settings windows 8. the only problem I have,is when I do updates....it goes all the way to 98% complete then this messages comes on screen as this : FAILURE CONFIGURING WINDOWS UPDATES.....REVERTING CHANGES....DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER. is there any way you can give me some advice on this problem? Thanks very much in advance.

You possibly have to many updates waiting to get installed.

My take would be to go to the microsoft.com site, get the 8.1 update, install it manualy, then, let the auto update take over.

If you still have the same problem, do the following:
Set the Microsoft Update to inform you about available updates, but let you chose when to download and install them.

You'll get a list of availabel updates. Sellect up to 10 of the OLDER critical ones and install them.
Once they are installed, repeat the process untill there are no more critical updates.

Do the same for the important ones.

Finaly, take a look at the optional ones. Install those that interest you.
