Idliing at 8000 RPM Peugeot 206 GLX 1.4 2000 reg?

My Peugeot 206 1.4 is idling at 8000 rpm and using a lot of fuel. Does anyone know what this could be and how to fix it please?

8000 rpm?? Really? The rev counter only reads up to 7000 rpm doesn't it?
