Hotpoint WMA40 lights flash?

My Hotpoint WMA40 fills up and empties but drum turns intermittently, and I have noticed a crackling sound. In addition the machine stops mid-cycle and the front washing cycle lights flash in sequence. Any ideas of the fault?

Sounds like the carbon brushes are going in the motor.
