starting problem ldv400 ford 2.5td?

When I try starting my ldv400 ford 2.5td it makes a juddering noise. On a warm dry day it seems to start okay and if I connect jump leads to another vehicle it starts without giving any revs making me think its an earth problem but if I put jump lead from the neg terminal to the engine and try to start it makes juddering noise again

Try going through your starting system, remove wiring and terminals, make sure all connections are clean and tight, pay particular attention to your main positive cable from battery to starter, these suffered from corrosion/high resistance resulting in poor starting.
