My key will not start car and have been told its either the steering column or it could be that the chip needs replacing in key.
Can any-one advise

It may just be the key needs reporgramming. Unfortunately you seem to think we are clairvoyant and somehow know what make/model car it is without you actually telling us

You could try to help yourself; do a Google search for MAKE MODEL key programming and see what you get back (Obviously replacing MAKE MODEL with what you actually have).

You could also try a Google search for MAKE MODEL key chip
