How can I fix a JCM Gold 223 Cash register bleeping ?

When I try to use the X or Z reading with the appropriate key, the machine just bleeps. Does anyone know a simple fix?

Hard to find info for those now. Great machine but I don't have my notes anymore. You could try Checkout tech. They are the only ones I know of with manuals for the 223:
