John Deere L130 clutch problem?

Problem: When engaging clutch to mower, the engine slows, then quits! For some time, the engine would slow, the speed up.

It sounds to me that the clutch is working fine.
It sounds to me as if the engine is starved of fuel and quits under load.

I just guess - I have no expertise or experience in this area.
