The large drive belt snapped on my Zanussi TC 470, I have tried to replace it but the new one is much to slack. Dose anyone know if there should be some sort of tensioner that needs to be fitted. It just seems that the belt goes round the drum and down to a wheel in the motor. I have looked all rond the drum and can not see anywhere else it can do. Help !!!

For what it's worth there seem to be several different versions of this drier. In my one the belt had to go straight to the motor shaft on the right hand side (looking at the back of the drier) and around the pulley and off to the left on the left-hand side. The pulley was under spring tension, not the motor, and you had to pull the pulley down and to the left to get the belt over it.

hi i have changed the belt on my Zanussi TC470 tumble dryier but the pully seems to be in the wrong place it is laying down to the left and when i move it to the right to add tention it just falls back the brass screw bellow dosen't tighten the motor in place would be very grateful to anyone that could help me out..thanks Scott

Kipper is absolutely spot on. I would recommend that you make sure that the spring is clipped round the correct bolt on the motor - as shown on his photo. Otherwise the belt won't tension properly

Here's how I did it...

First and foremost make sure you have the correct belt. There seem to be 3 sizes of belt for the Zanussi TC470. I telephoned the serial number of my machine to the help desk to ensure I bought the correct one.

Isolate machine from the mains (pull the plug out!). Remove water tank.

Remove 2 screws from under back of lid, slide lid back and lift lid off.

Remove single screw from white cover at bottom rear of machine. The right hand side of the white cover is a push fit into the rear panel and is detached by lifting the lugs over the edge of the panel. Remove white cover. Remove figure-of-eight fan belt.

Remove screws from around the edge of the rear panel. Get the missus to help support the front of the drum. Lift the drum and rear panel back from the front panel a few centimetres until there is a small gap at the front.

With the assistant holding the front of the drum, place the new belt around the drum at the door end (front) of the drum and down through the small gap you've just created.

Take this opportunity to remove fluff from the circular slot in the front panel which the drum fits into.

Slide the rear panel with drum forward, locating the front of the drum back into the slot.

Replace the screws holding the rear panel to the frame, checking that the drum revolves freely before finally tightening them.

You'll find that there's a trace of a track on the rear of the drum left by the previous belt. Manipulate the new belt back over this track, making sure that the ribbed side of the belt is in contact with the drum. Place a couple of bits of duct tape over the belt to hold it in position.

Before tipping the machine forward onto its front, put down some protection onto the floor to avoid damaging the control knob. Also be aware that some residual water will escape from the machine onto the floor. Tip the machine onto its front.

With the assistant at the lid end of the machine and yourself at the bottom, revolve the drum. As the drum goes round, the assistant should place additional bits of tape over the belt at the top and you should remove them at the bottom until you're satisfied that the belt is not twisted at any point.

Pull the belt over the shaft of the motor.

You'll find that you can lift the motor against some springs which are attached to its mountings. Lift the motor against the pull of the springs as high as you can and then pull the belt over the left hand side of the small tensioning pulley wheel so that it's the non ribbed side of the belt which is in contact with this pulley wheel.

Check that the belt is correctly located on the shaft of the motor and turn the drum a few times to make sure it revolves smoothly with the belt correctly in place.

Replace figure-of-eight fan belt and white cover. Lift machine back onto its feet and replace lid.

Try it Oily's way?
John has described the correct way the belt should run.
MAKE SURE THE MACHINE IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE MAINS SUPPLY!
The easy way to get the belt on, is to hold the belt around the pulley as decribed with one hand, then with the other hand, reach over and, starting the belt on the drum, rotate the drum clockwise (thats clockwise from the back of the machine). BE VERY CAREFULL NOT TO TRAP ANY SKIN OR DIGITS IN THE BELT/PULLEY down the bottom!!!!
It will be found that the drum rotates easily as the belt falls into place (it may be neccessary to do some final adjustment of the belt position on the shaft at the last knockings). Before replacing the plastic cover and the lid (top) run the machine to make sure the belt positions itself in the right place.
The tension spring tensions under the motor from left to right when in the correct position.
Good Luck, and mind your fingers! You will need them to count the cash you have saved!

found it easier to take the pulley off and then put belt around the pulley. the motor is springloaded so push motor from right to left and then can place pulley back inplace with belt attached. Still tricky though!

had the same problem myself, where the belt comes from under the drum you need to take it up over the tension pulley then down to the drive shaft,( so that the belt is pulling the tensioner down towards the drum) and it aint easy, best of luck.

Have a look at the motor and you'll see a small pulley wheel just to the left of it, coming from the right the belt goes around the motor shaft and then needs to go behind the spring loaded pulley wheel to add the tension to the belt, hope this makes sense.
