A glass herb jar fell on the edge of my ceramic hob and chpped it, is it possible to mend it?

I know this is an old thread but guess some people may still stumble upon it.

Best fix I found was to fill chip with some black Milliput putty (less than a fiver on e-bay) then gloss over it was some gloss black porc-a-fix (about a tenner on amazon).

we have a few hairline cracks on our ceramic hob. is it necressary to replace it or can I repair it?

Very easy to repair. Just take out the induction hob completely (after turning the supply off at the mains), no need to disconnect any wiring provided you have enough slack cable. the hob glass is held onto the hob unit itself along the four sides of the hob by small Philips screws about 10 to 12 of them. It is very obvious which ones. lift off the hob glass and drop on the new replacement. No electrics involved at all. The glass just sits on top of the hob and is fastened with the small screws. Even the biggest numpty could do it. Total time about 15 max. The biggest headache is the replacement glass, which you get from the hob manufacturer. Now this is the problem, Bosch charge £225 plus VAT for the replacement glass!!!!
But you would save the £95 call out charge for their engineer to fit it.
OK I suppose if you don't want to go through the insurance and the hob was very expensive in the first place.
For cheapo hobs then then replacement is the only answer or buying a non working hob with good glass off ebay.

our Neff ceramic hob cracked last week ( 28/2/2014 ) got the model number, emailed Neff and they phoned to arrange an engineer to come and sort it. We have to pay for the new glass as we are not going through insurance, Neff has a parts department who sorted it all for us

I caught the corner of our hobb with a glass tumbler which shattered and damaged the corner leaving a sharp edge. I was lucky in that there are no cracks into the main surface of the hob. My fix is a strip of flexible black plastic beading around the whole hob. I have cut The strip at right angles to allow a neat run around each corner. The weight of the hob keeps it in place and it looks neat and as if it were there from new. This not only covers the damaged corner but also acts a defence in the future all round the hob. It can be removed for cleaning. This should have been a manufacture feature from the outset, I think.

To fix minor edge damage first lift the hob. You don't need to disconnect it usually if there is enough slack cable, so can do it yourself without an electrician but do switch it off at the wall plate. When the hob is clear grind the splintered edge with a grinding wheel fitted to an electric drill. You get them from the DIY centre. (Use goggles and a face mask) Make sure that the damage is ground out to a smooth contour completely removing any trace of the original chip. If you don't completely remove all the damage it will remain as a stress raiser and will eventually crack. Using stainless steel 22 SWG sheet cut out 4 strips wide enough to cover the damage removed and cut the ends at 45 deg. If the edge of the glass hob sits on top of the worktop you can dress down the edge of the strips to form an 'L' shape to cover the edge of the glass hob. Secure the strips with high temp RTV.

I dropped a glass spice jar on the corner of our schott hob but have continued using the other three rings for the past 2 years! probably not the best advice but have just spoken to our village electrician who has advised me to buy a new one from B and Q (same shape) and he will take 2 hours to fit it at a cost of about £50.

OMG .... I have (or someone has - wasn't me!!) chipped the corner of my two week old ceramic hob ..... am I a happy bunny??? Especially when I read (above) that the crack may spread and make the hob unusable ..... it is Christmas Day tomorrow :-(

i just bought an ex demo half price Hotpoint glass hob from Comet which was an older model but has a steel frame all around the edge - current design with un-protected edges simply defies common sense . you can't repair a crack as the proximity of heat will ,over a period of time ,weaken the glue . and it will look a complete dog anyway.- buy a new one..

This is a nightmare. My broken Hob Glass is Currys own brand. Their parts supplier PARTSMASTER say that the part is obsolete yet they still sell the whole unit. I contacted Customer Services 2 weeks ago and they said that the part will be available soon.
Repair companies are hard to come by: I phoned 0800Repair.com and was told that they couldn't even fit a replacement glass.

Anyone out there to help - I am joining this long queue having dropped the olive oil bottle on to my girlfriends hob and chipped it and the thin crack has spread right across - is it still usable?

nah insurance claim is the only answer but they have asked me to submit 2 quotes for replacement and fitting and noone seems to want to do it not even kitchens direct who we got it from in the first place,its proving a nightmare! i could buy one but all are 3 weeks delivery and i cant fit it! and kitchen companies dont want to do just a hob they want to flog a whole kitchen! help! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Also just done the same, this time with a jar of coffee. I spoke to Neff who doubted that it could be repaired and suggested that I submit an insurance claim. Having spoken to the insurance company they also are not aware of how it could be repaired.

If you can still use it you are lucky as same happened to mine dropped a top of a beer bottle chipped the edge then as I tried to cook the crack spread right across the hob deeming the cooker unusable. Had to replace the cooker costing £360 only after 9months.
The design is not good there need to be a steel frame around it to protect it. Now I am a nervous wreck in the kitchen worried when is the next accident going to happen.
