Why does dishwasher sound like its draining before cycle begins ?

When i start the cycle it drains for a couple of seconds and after that it just stops. Why? No water seems to enter but there is water supply.
Can it perhaps be a faulty thing that opens for the water to come in or perhaps the motor. Pleeeez advise if possible. Its quite an old machine

All dishwashers drain for a few seconds at start of a cycle. Water inlet valve then has to open to allow water to flow in. Once again we have to ask what make & model you are asking about? We don't know if you don't tell us.

You make an accurate diagnosis in my opinion.
It's unlikely to be a problem with the motor that drives the circulation pump - I think that will only run when there's water inside the machine. No water - no wash.
