Maytag SAV2555AWW washer?

My Maytag washing machine quit working (Model SAV2555AWW). It makes sort of a grinding noise after fill up and the agitator doesn't work. However, it will spin the water out when placed on "spin" cycle! Is there a plastic gear that may be broken/stripped that I can replace? If so, where is it located and is there a manual/picture/diagram that I can use? Any help is appreciated!

how does the belt go on

the belt on my sav2555aww is worn. The replacement one from the dealer is $25. Man that hurts. Can't I use a $8 belt from the auto parts store? does anyone know what size it is. If not I might just take the old one off and get a belt just a little smaller than the one that's on there since it's too loose.

It is not just maytag with this problem. Kenmore washers also. Whirlpool makes Kenmore and Maytag and a bunch of other brand names. In my case the large plastic gear stripped two months out of warranty. Not worth the money for the repair. They don't make em like they used to. My first machine lasted three kids and thirty years

Feb. 16, 2009...I had the same problem with model SAV2655AWW. I pulled the transmission, which was a huge job, and took it apart. I found the wore out gear (input pinion). I do understand the use of plastic gears, but, if this is gonna happen after 3 1/2 years, then I'll take the noise and weight of metel gears! Now, if I would have called Maytag first, they offer a long warranty on the transmission, but you need a service pro to do both the diagnosis of the transmission problem and the replacement of the transmission ($300). My best advice...buy a new washer... and not a Maytag! More info at http://tools.ticona.com/tools/documents/literature/us/AP97/AP97_01res300dpi.PDF

I have a broken belt on my Maytag SAV2555AWW washing machine. How hard is it to replace that myself?

Oh Mike this is Pedro,

One more thing, if you do find the gear pinion please post the exact information on where you found it and type. There are others with the same problem.

Yes, there is a type of plastic gear pinion that wears out. This is inside the transmission. You need to take the transmission open. However, you have to pry it open because the transmission is sealed with bent clamps. Anyway, once you open it you will find several plastic gears the one that usually wears out is the one that drives the gear for washing: the pinion is small with teeth that will probably be worn out; this is why it doesn't spin.

Good Luck.
