problem with reverse gear?

i have a vauxhall zafira 1800 sri when i put it into reverse sometimes i cannot get it back out i have to bring clutch in and out a few times before it will release and now theres a wine coming from the engine area can anybody help

Ron,
I'm afraid that whine is bad news.
You have an impending gearbox fail if I am right, which is common with the 6 speed box. You can get the box repaired for hundreds or replaced for about three and half grand.
Confirm with a dealer, but your output bearing is sounding like it is knacked.
